What the numbers show

NHTSA counted 39,254 deaths in 2024 in its final figures and estimates 36,640 for 2025, with decreases in 39 states, DC and Puerto Rico (NHTSA). The 2025 rate of 1.10 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles compares with 1.19 in 2024.

The National Safety Council, which counts slightly differently, estimates 18,460 motor-vehicle deaths in January to June 2026, 2% below the same period of 2025, while miles driven rose 0.8%. Its mileage death rate was 1.12, down 3.4%.

What is driving it

Speeding and risky driving rose sharply in 2020 and 2021 when roads emptied, and deaths followed. The fall since then is partly that behaviour unwinding, plus enforcement campaigns on speeding, impaired and distracted driving. NHTSA notes that distracted driving still kills about one person every 2.5 hours. Pedestrian and motorcyclist deaths remain high compared with the early 2010s.
