Trend summary
- India recorded 467,857 accidental deaths in 2024 (4.68 lakh), up 5.3% on 2023, according to the NCRB’s Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India report.
- The death rate rose to 33.3 per 100,000 people, from 31.9. Men made up 82.4% of those who died.
- Away from the roads, the big killers are everyday ones: drowning (40,044), falls (26,437), poisoning (21,747) and electrocution (15,861).
- Deaths from forces of nature jumped 22.6% to 7,903, led by lightning and heatstroke. Crowd crushes at temples, stations and rallies keep making headlines in 2025 and 2026.
What the numbers show
The National Crime Records Bureau counted 467,857 accidental deaths in 2024, against 444,104 in 2023 and 430,504 in 2022 (NCRB ADSI 2024; PolicyEdge summary of ADSI 2023). That is a 5.3% rise in a year. The rate went from 31.9 to 33.3 deaths per 100,000 people. Traffic accidents are the largest single group at 199,443 deaths, and we cover them on the road page. Maharashtra reported the most accidental deaths (75,807), followed by Madhya Pradesh (45,695) and Uttar Pradesh (42,987) (ADSI 2024, Chapter 1).
Beyond traffic, the 2024 tables show 76,024 sudden deaths, 40,044 drownings, 26,437 falls, 21,747 poisonings and 15,861 electrocutions. Most drownings (31,210) were accidental falls into water; only 105 were boat capsizes. Falls from height killed 13,734 people, and 192 died in manholes or sewers. Collapsing structures killed 1,525, two-thirds of them (988) in homes. Factory and machine accidents were recorded as 660 deaths and accidental explosions as 360 (ADSI 2024, Table 1.10). Forces of nature killed 7,903: lightning 2,825, heat and sunstroke 1,832, cold 833, floods 361 and landslides 351 (ADSI 2024, Chapter 1).
What is driving it
Weather is the fastest-growing part. Deaths from forces of nature rose 22.6% in one year, from 6,444 to 7,903, and lightning and heat alone made up nearly six in ten of them (NCRB). The 2023 report already showed lightning as the largest natural killer, at 39.7% (PolicyEdge). Working-age adults carry most of the burden: people aged 30 to 45 were 31.3% of all accidental deaths in 2024.
Crowds are the other recurring story. In just over a year the Prime Minister’s Office issued condolence notes for crushes at Tirupati, New Delhi railway station, Karur, Srikakulam, Lakhisarai and Kolkata (PMO). NCRB’s own count of stampede deaths rose in 2024, though the chapter text does not give the number. Firecracker and chemical factory blasts, such as Sangareddy in 2025 and Kakinada and Kaushambi in 2026, show how thin safety margins still are in small industrial units.
Recent cases
- 17 October 2026: A crush at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata killed at least 17 people during sudden rain; the Prime Minister announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for each family (The Week; PMO).
- 31 August 2026: An explosion at a firecracker factory in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh, caused deaths, and the Prime Minister’s Office issued a condolence message (PMO).
- May 2026: NCRB published Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2024: 467,857 accidental deaths and a rate of 33.3 per 100,000 (NCRB).

Many years list fewer than five items, and some have none yet. Older Government of India releases are hard to find at their original addresses, and we only list items we could open and check. We are still adding to these lists. Where a page shows no date, the date comes from the release address or the publisher’s own index.

How this page is built. Figures come from the official statistical releases linked above; where agencies publish provisional numbers we say so, because they are revised. Many Indian statistics are compiled state by state and published a year or two late (NCRB’s accident report for 2024 came out in 2026), so we say which year each figure covers. Large numbers are written in international form, with lakh (100,000) and crore (10 million) in brackets where Indian sources use them. Photos are public-domain or Creative Commons images credited in each caption; file photos are illustrative and are not from the events described unless the caption says so. This page tracks trends and is not personal safety, medical, legal or financial advice.
